Description
George Pickersgill and Sons Ltd was a company based in Shipley, a market town located in West Yorkshire, England. The company was established in 1868 by George Pickersgill, a skilled pattern maker, who began a small business making patterns for textile mills in the area. As the business grew, George was joined by his sons, who took over the company after his death in 1908.
Under the leadership of his sons, the company expanded and diversified its operations to include engineering and foundry work, producing goods ranging from textile machinery to cast iron fireplaces.
One of the notable products produced by the company was the Pickersgill-Kaye padlock, which was widely used by the military and the security industry during World War II. The padlock was unique in that it had a complex locking mechanism that made it virtually impossible to pick or force open.
During the 1950s, the company transitioned its focus to producing chemical processing equipment for the textile industry, a move that proved successful and saw George Pickersgill and Sons become a leading manufacturer in the field.
However, the company’s success was short-lived, and it faced financial difficulties in the 1970s, culminating in its eventual closure in the early 1980s. The closure marked the end of an era for Shipley, as a company that had been a significant presence in the town for over a century was forced to shut down.
Despite the company’s closure, the legacy of George Pickersgill and Sons lives on, with many of the products and machinery produced by the company still in use today. The company’s contribution to the industrial heritage of Shipley and the wider West Yorkshire area remains significant, and it continues to be remembered as a testament to the ingenuity and skill of its founders and workers.
